I have had only awesome meals lately and the service has been great. They also have a great breakfast in the morning and good Bloddy Mary's. I only wish they would go to non- smoking.

Flannigans has a great menu and attentive staff. When my parents came from out of town I took them there for lunch and they loved it.

"A" and "D" took Memorial Day week-end off from food exploration and visited a few local bars we had not tried before for a selection of draft beers and Bloody Gin Mary's.

Tim Flanagan's is a treat. The feel is 'neighborhood bar' with Cheers-like regulars. And, are they ever friendly! No feeling like an unknown stranger here.

The draft selection is not big or exotic . . . except it may be one of Des Moines' only places where you can get Stella Artois on draft. Stella Artois is a celebrated Euro Pale Lager style beer from Stella Artois in Leuven, Belgium. It has been a major draft beer in Europe for years and is considered Belgium's original beer. A good draw at Flanagan's and the temperature was right: Euro moderate.

"A's" Bloody Mary's were great; well-made and spicy. A bit more garnish would dress them up, but a decently built drink. Those big stalks of celery and fancy olives would be the perfect addition for a "Flanagan's Mary" that would stand out among a fairly mediocre Des Moines competitive Bloody Mary offering.

The customers are interesting, friendly, tend to be older and semi-professional drinkers. Tim himself and his sisters and other relatives, and the bartenders, are welcoming, friendly and genuinely care if you come back. This is the type of friendly atmosphere that you come back to and a place for having a regular stool at the bar. It's also not terribly smoke-filled . . .bearable.

"A" and "D" will go back to try the food . . . and some more beers and Mary's!

I respectfully disagree with "Poop Head" because the wings I had at Flanagan's were certainly not the best in town. In fact, they were not good at all. The wings were fried, not baked, and were extremely greasy. Additionally, they were bland. The salads were fairly poor also, as were the mozzarella sticks. Thankfully, they served beer and I was able to wash away the memories of the meal with an ice-cold Bass. Obviously, the stars are for the beer.
