Simply said under new ownership this place has really improved and seems to continue to improve every time I stop in. The breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings are allways great and one of the better priced places in town. The new owner Al Bickell seems to keep adding new things to the line up of the week. Sunday night is Showtune Sundays allthough they are not my thing the people who sing seem to be really good. Tuesday nights is steak night and is one of the best steaks in town plus acoustic open mic is on Tuesday and is really good. Wensdays is early karaoke for I guess older and younger crowds. Thursday they actually have a special needs karaoke night from 6 till 8 and is allways packed. The weekend nights are still great for karaoke and is the best karaoke system in Central Iowa if not the whole state. I guess I don't understand the no character thing, unless the old Billy's that was filthy and smelly is character, cuz if it is you can keep your character. I prefer the new Billy's with flat screen TV's and a whole new sound system and it's clean. I love going to Billy's for parties and for different karaoke nights. If nothing else Al Bickell should be commended for keeping the same atmosphere and cleaning up a landmark. He should also be commended for having a special needs karaoke time

Wow, what a change under new ownership. The place seems so sterile with no personality. The staff are fine, but it has no charisma. You can tell it is a newly redone place under new management. I was in tonight for my third time and it still does not feel like a place trying to be it’s self, but a bar trying to be its own little brother.

*** UPDATE *** UPDATE
"Billie Joe's Lounge and Grill"has been bought by a young man (Al Bickell) that has redone the place. All of Des Moines is now no smoking so that's not an issue. He did away with the picture show end of it, but still does karaoke nightly. The food is priced right and I can't say enough about how great it is. Linda and Angela are two of the nicest people you can meet. They go out of their way to make you feel welcome. In fact, the entire staff does. It was my first visit there (I'm from Wisconsin) , but it certainly won't be my last! Tell em Wally and Winky sent ya!!!

I would have to agree that Billy Joe's Pitcher Show does market to a specific group of people. You have to be open and easy going to fully enjoy the place. You have to leave your judgemental eyes at the door and bring a happy open heart with you other wise you will miss out on some really awesome people. Billy Joe's Picture Show Friday night midnight showing of Rocky horror Picture Show isn't like most showings. We don't do all the rice throwing and everything but, there are a lot of the city's most interesting people there. So come and see and don't be scared we aren't as weird as we look. Ok maybe that is a lie. We are weird but, a good weird. Billy's is fun and care free. Honestly what more could you ask for in a small city in the middle of Iowa.

I love the concept of this place, but it's time to remodel! Has the building, furnishings or anything been updated since 1980? The dated, worn appearance gives me a "this place isn't a clean as it could be" feeling. This could really be a cool place if the owners would reinvest in their property.

I just recently entered Billy Joes after a 10+ year absence. The last time was when I was a child watching Goonies. This time I was old enough to enter the lounge area, I would of rather watched a movie. Couple things to note about this place:

1- If you don’t smoke, exit immediately. The smoke is so bad my eyes were watering by the end of the night. I went to their website and notice that matinee movies are smoke free, wow.

2- Karaoke is only fun when you know the people or the singers can hold a tune. Don’t go on Karaoke night unless you want to hear some really bad karaoke. Personally I really dislike hearing my favorite songs turn into total crap, but that’s just me.

3- It was voted “Cheapest place to take a date”. Enough said.

4- The crowd is obviously regulars and although they were really amusing, they were also annoying.

The only reason this place deserves any stars is the fact that it is completely unique. A bar next to a movie theater that has a wait staff and instead of typical movie row seating they have tables and chairs. They also have unique gatherings; every Friday is Rocky Horror Picture Show night. Billy Joe’s markets to a specific group, which isn’t a bad idea, the group just doesn’t include me.
